問：以下一句，without warning二字用得正確嗎？──Within seconds and without warning, I lost consciousness and that concerns me a lot。
答：Warning除了解作「警告」，也可解作「預兆」，without warning即「沒有預兆」或「事先不知情」，例如：（1）He arrived without warning（他突然到來）。（2）Chest pain may be a warning of a heart attack（胸部疼痛，或是心臟病發的徵兆）。讀者示下那一句的without warning，用法當然正確。全句是說：「我一下子失去知覺，而且事前毫無徵兆，這令我十分擔心。」
問：Stair和stairs的用法有什麼分別？
答：Stair今天一般是指「一級樓梯」，stairs則是「一段樓梯」。從前，「一段樓梯」也可稱為stair，但這用法今天很少見，例如：（1）He fell down the stairs（或stair）（他從樓梯上摔下來）。（2）He was sitting on the top / bottom stair（他坐在樓梯最高／最低一級）。
問：I will be out of the office until 9 February這一句，是說那一天恢復上班，二月九日還是十日？
答：這一句直譯是「我直到二月九日都不在辦公室」，讀者無法斷定是二月九日還是十日恢復上班。同樣意思含糊的說法還有I will be out of the office to / through to 9 February。假如要清楚說明二月九日也不在辦公室，美式說法是I will be out of the office through 9 February，英式說法則是I will be out of the office to 9 February inclusive。
