難以置信、不止一個 - 古德明
問：鄭月娥「當選」香港行政長官之後一天，當局即大舉拘捕民主運動者，有專欄作家引述外籍朋友一句評語：The whole thing is incredulous（整件事難以置信）。這incredulous是不是應改為incredible？外籍人士英文怎麼會錯？
答：外籍人士，即使長於英語國家，英文也常見錯誤，這和中國人筆下中文或錯誤纍纍，並無分別。讀者切勿以為母語為英語者，英文必定正確。
至於incredulous，一度可以和incredible一樣，解作「難以置信」，不過，今天一般解作「狐疑的」，例如：As he listened to the incredible story, he looked increasingly incredulous（他聽着那個難以置信的故事，臉上狐疑的神氣越來越明顯）。Incredible、incredulous二字，不宜再視為同義詞。讀者說的那一句，incredulous的確應改為incredible。
問：以下一句，那個選擇正確？──There is / are more than one way to do it（要做這件事，有不止一個方法）。
答：More than one應配單數動詞，所以，應說There is more than one way。謹多舉一例：More than one （child）has gone down with fever（不止一個（孩子）發燒病倒）。但是，more... than one則須配複數動詞，例如：（1）More children than one have gone down with fever。（2）There are more ways than one to do it。
