主動、執法偏私、黑警 - 古德明
問：小女英文練習有以下一句：They cleaned the floor initiatively（他們主動清理地板）。查字典，不見initiatively一字有「主動」的意思。英文練習那一句正不正確？
答：Initiatively這個字，英文詞典十九不載，大如韋氏詞典Webster's Dictionary of the English Language都沒有收錄。牛津字典The New Shorter Oxford English Dictionary則收在形容詞initiative條下，沒有注釋，但形容詞注釋是characterized by initiating something（主動發起某事的），副詞（adverb）initiatively當然也有這個意思。
不過，initiatively這個字雖然有牛津字典可稽，英語國家的人卻很少用，甚或聽都不會聽過。要說「主動地」，最好還是用initiative作名詞，例如They took the initiative in cleaning the floor / They cleaned the floor on their own initiative。
問：「執法偏私」和「黑警」英文怎樣說？
答：「執法偏私」英文可以有很多說法，較好的應是selective / arbitrary enforcement of the law，即「因人而異的／隨意的執行法律」，例如：How can the rule of law be established on the selective enforcement of the law?（執法因人而異，怎能建立法治？）
「黑警」應是指香港那些拳打自由腳踢法治的警察，英文沒有固定說法，譯做police gangs（成群的惡警）、the ruffianly police（流氓警察）等都可以，例如：Brutal police gangs / The ruffianly police attacked the protesters without provocation（黑警襲擊沒有挑惹他們的抗議者）。
