與時遷移 - 古德明
一位朋友來示，囑試譯英國文法學者惠廷頓（Robert Whittington）一五二零年對摩爾（Thomas More）的頌詞。
摩爾生於一四七八年，一五二九年獲英王亨利八世委為大法官。亨利一五零九年登極，與兄長遺孀凱瑟琳結婚，得羅馬教皇特許其婚姻合法。一五二七年，亨利有意休妻再娶，請羅馬教皇宣布其與凱瑟琳之婚姻非法。教皇不肯出爾反爾，亨利於是決定擺脫教皇影響，一五三四年成立英格蘭教會，不隸屬羅馬教皇，自為教主，並與凱瑟琳離婚，別娶安妮。摩爾不同意脫離羅馬天主教，被控叛國，一五三五年斬首。一九六零年，英國劇作家博爾特（Robert Bolt）寫成戲劇A Man for All Seasons，後拍成電影，中文譯作《日月精忠》。
A man for all seasons直譯是「適合各個季節的人」。這片語就是出自惠廷頓對摩爾的頌詞：More is a man of an angel's wit and singular learning. I know not his fellow. For where is the man of that gentleness, lowliness and affability? And, as time requireth, a man of marvellous mirth and pastimes, and sometime of sad gravity. A man for all seasons。謹翻譯如下：「摩爾智比天人，學富五車，吾未見其匹，亦未見有溫良謙厚一如彼者。其歡樂也有時，肅穆也有時，誠為與時遷移之君子。」中國人所謂「與時遷移」，指應物變化，不失其道，與中共人之投機取巧不同。
