必須、怕蝕底 - 古德明
問：食物安全聯盟（Food Safety Preventive Controls Alliance）有訓練課程手冊，其中一句說Language in the regulation was updated, such as using "must" instead of "shall"（條例所用語言，已隨時代更新，如shall改為must）。Shall和must有什麼分別？
答：英文法律文件常用shall表示「必須」，與第三身主詞（third-person subject）連用，例如：（1）Civil servants shall not accept gifts（公務員不得接受贈品）。（2）The company shall publish an annual report to keep its shareholders informed of its development（公司須出版年報，以便股東了解其發展）。這樣的shall字，日常英文一般會用must或should取代。讀者示下那一句，應是說shall字今天讀起來不大自然，所以改用must。
問：「佢好怕蝕底」這一句的「怕」字，英文怎樣翻譯才好？
答：「佢好怕蝕底」即「他很怕吃虧」。那個「怕」不可以有固定翻譯，須按上下文譯做to fear、to hate、do not like等。「蝕底」的譯法，同樣不可一成不變，可按文義譯做to be cheated、to suffer losses、to be put at a disadvantage等，例如：（1）He is one who hates（或does not like）to be cheated（他是個唯恐吃虧的人）。（2）I fear that the money-losing deal would prove disadvantageous to the company（我擔心這次賠錢的交易，會令公司吃虧）。
