昨晚；stated和as stated - 古德明
問：「昨晚」英文除了說last night，可不可說yesterday night？上谷歌搜尋，兩個說法並見。
答：「昨晚」是last night，古英語還會說yesternight，但yesterday night卻不是慣用語，一般視為不正確。互聯網上英文，瓦玉集糅，未必可作準繩。
當然，「昨晚」英文也可說yesterday evening。但yesterday evening是指昨天日落之後以及睡覺之前那段時間；last night則除了也可指那段時間，還可指今天凌晨的時候。例如：（1）We went to a concert yesterday evening / last night（昨晚我們去聽音樂會）。（2）I woke up several times last night（我昨晚多次醒過來）。第二句的last night不可用yesterday evening取代。
問：以下一句，stated之前的as一字，可不可刪去？──I agree to abide by the terms and conditions as stated on the following page（我同意遵守下一頁所述條件）。
答：這一句用不用as都可以，意思無別，但所用句法不同。Terms and conditions stated等於terms and conditions that are stated，略去的是關係代名詞（relative pronoun）以及be（即are、was等）；terms and conditions as stated則等於terms and conditions as they are stated，略去的是代名詞（pronoun）以及be。這兩種省略法都很常見，例如（1）The man （who was） arrested was an off-duty policeman（被捕者是個下了班的警察）。（2）He paid me $100 a day, as （it was）agreed（他如約每天支付一百元給我）。
