學生手冊
問：學生手冊上「學校／家長通知家長／學校事項」一欄，我認為可譯作Acknowledgement from school / parent，同事則譯作Messages from school / parents，那個譯法較好？又學生的「遲到／請假紀錄」可不可譯做Record of lateness / leave？
答：Messages from school / parents應是較好的譯法，那parents泛指學生家長，一般會用複數；而說「（給某某的）信息」，也應用message一字，不用acknowledgement。Acknowledgement有「收悉」含義，表示收到別人的信息，例如：I wrote to apply for the position more than a month ago, but I have not received any acknowledgement（我一個多月之前寫信求職，但至今沒有接到收悉通知）。
至於「遲到／請假紀錄」，可譯做Record of lateness and excused （或authorised） absences。學生缺席，無論是否獲父母或醫生等許可，應叫absence，不叫leave。「遲到」則也有人叫tardy，名詞是tardiness，例如：Students who are three times tardy to （= late for） school will get a warning（學生遲到三次，就會受到警告。）Tardy說來沒有late那麼自然。「遲到紀錄」譯做Record of lateness當勝於Record of tardiness。
Leave一字，多用來說雇員的假期，例如：The school office sees to it that all staff's leave records are kept up to date（校務處負責更新所有職員的假期紀錄）。
