In November 1943, American marines ousted the Japanese from the tiny atoll Tarawa. Navy cooks served them a hearty meal before their 20 November landing. Steak, eggs, fried potatoes, and coffee would be the last meal for slightly more than one thousand of them who would be killed in the next three days.
Robert Paine, one of the marines, remembered his ship's chaplain, Rev McNally, offering his benediction before the battle. McNally told them, "In a few moments, you're going over the side.＊ Some of you are not coming back. I want you to give those Japs hell. I'd like you to kneel for general absolution."

＊Side即ship's side，等於中文的「舷」。美國俚語go over the hill有「越獄」、「（軍人）潛逃」的意思，美國海軍把the hill改為the side，指「擅自離船」。當然，本文going over the side絕對沒有「擅自」含義。
