寫日記、做運動 - 古德明
問：用英文寫日記，動詞除了用過去式，可不可以用現在式？
答：寫日記和普通寫作一樣，說過去通常就用過去式動詞，說現在則用現在式動詞等等。美國南北戰爭期間，一個女孩寫的日記經編輯成書，書名 A Confederate Girl: The Diary of Carrie Berry, 1864，其中八月四日的一段，就用了現在進行完成式（have been flying）、現在完成式（have stayed）、過去式（put）以及未來式（will try），可供參考：The shells have been flying all day and we have stayed in the cellar. Mama put me on knitting some stockings this morning and I will try to finish them before school commences（砲彈整天飛個不停。我們一直留在地下室裏。母親今早叫我織些長襪。我會盡量在開學之前，把襪織好）。
當然，無論是不是寫日記，過去的事有時也會用現在式敍述，使事情有「如在目前」的感覺，例如敍述一宗已發生的劫案：Two men walk into the bank, take out their guns, and tell the tellers to give them all the money from their tills（兩個男人走進銀行，拿出手槍，叫出納員把抽屜裏的錢全部拿出來給他們）。
問：「做運動」可不可以譯做to play sports？
答：「做運動」英文是to play sport（s）或to do sport（s），例如：He plays / does various sports to keep in good shape（他做各種運動，保持身體健康）。
